Digital radiography is a powerful diagnostic tool used to detect dental disorders and injuries. Radiographs are a required part of a complete oral health examination. The new AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) guidelines recommend radiographs to detect pathology and studies have shown that almost a 1/3 of patients with normal looking mouths have pathology that warrants treatment.
A quick and painless process, radiology uses a controlled, extremely low dose x-ray radiation to examine your pet’s mouth, allowing us to almost instantly assess teeth from crown to root tip. It also allows us to visualize the supporting structures of teeth such as the periodontal ligament space, areas of bone loss, overlapping tooth roots, broken teeth, extra roots, unerupted teeth, cysts, as well as assessment of the jaw bones for areas of fracture. It is also used after a tooth extraction to ensure the whole tooth root was removed.
