While not always easy to see, cats and dogs are at risk of developing tumors inside their mouth. These are often benign but can be malignant (cancerous). Many oral tumors can easily be treated with long-term success. These tumors can appear in the bone, the soft tissue of the gums, and periodontal ligaments, lips, tongue, or throat.
The most important aspect of treatment is early detection and intervention. Oral exams by our staff can identify potential growths and discuss the best diagnostic and treatment plans. Because some oral cancers can look like a sore or another benign process it is important to fully assess even minor changes.
A biopsy is performed to get a tissue sample, which is then used to determine what type of tumor the growth is. Imaging with dental x-rays or a referral for a CT can also be used to fully assess the extent of a tumor and aid in appropriate treatment recommendations. Oral mass removal depends on the type, size, and location of the tumor. Depending on the circumstances, a tumor may be excised alone or with a section of the surrounding tissue area to ensure all malignant tissue is removed. For some types of tumors, additional treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation may be necessary.
The most common types of oral malignant tumors are melanoma, carcinoma, fibrosarcoma and osteosarcoma. For the majority of oral tumors, surgical removal is the most effective treatment.
