The gingiva is the soft pink tissue surrounding all the teeth, forming a barrier between the tooth roots and the oral cavity. Chronic irritation to the gums from tartar and periodontal disease, along with some medical conditions or medications may contribute to excessive gum tissue formation. When this happens the gum tissues are inflamed and produce too much tissue, forming deep pockets. These pockets increase the risk of infection and harbor bacteria that accelerate periodontal disease, leading to tooth loss. This dental procedure helps remove and remodel the excessive diseased gum tissue to eliminate deep pockets that are formed between the base of your pet’s teeth and the gum line.
